What is Social Marketing?
Posted on June 28th, 2009 | by John Baril |For any online business, a marketing strategy that requires lesser time and funding is good news. The emergence of social networking sites is one of these pieces of good news. As you may already know by now, social networking sites are online communities composed of people with the same interests, likes, opinions, and so on. Since it is focused on a specific group of people, it is easier to pinpoint prospective clients. This way, there is lesser time spent on searching for possible customers while it virtually costs nothing at all since most social sites give free memberships.
The downside of this method of promotion though is the fact that you are dealing with real people. Unlike paid TV advertisements where the viewers have no choice but listen and watch an ad for a couple of seconds to continue watching their favorite show, promotion in social networking sites can be marked as spam by members or banned by moderators of the site. As simple as it seems, social networking promotion requires patience and skills.
Social marketing is a scientific and method-driven marketing concept that focuses on mutual benefits both for the business and the community it promotes itself to. Usually viewed as an effective marketing device with non-commercial goals, social marketing can be an effective tool for online social networking sites. In this marketing strategy, a product is being promoted while delivering a positive or helpful message to the community as well. An example is a business for used cars giving step by step tips on how to select the best used car.

Google recently announced that they are taking social marketing seriously in the SERP’s. That means you can use YouTube videos, FaceBook pages and similar properties to build out a robust company profile, back-link those pages with bookmarks and status site links for some serious SEO rankings if you know what you’re doing.
