What Can Social Networking Sites Contribute to a Business?

Posted on June 27th, 2009 | by John Baril |

Online social networking is an Internet based community of people who share the same interests, likes, and opinions about politics, religion, and the like. Since these communities are usually composed of people with the same interests, it is easier to pinpoint and target a community that may be interested in the product or services that a business offers. This means lesser time in spreading information campaigns and promotion.

While promotion through social networking sites seem like a simple task, it may also prove to be challenging. Not all promotion or information campaigns are successful to penetrate a community. Most of the time, online users do not like commercials or promotions on the sites they frequent in. Most promotions are banned or marked as spam, blocking the person responsible from further access to the site. This method of advertisement therefore needs a skilled professional or someone with the understanding and skills to promote a service or product without annoying or irritating other members of the community. This method of promotion, while cheap and relatively easy, takes some time to master and patience.

This is where social marketing comes in handy. Social marketing involves techniques in promoting a product or a service by providing positive enforcement to the society at the same time. An example is an information campaign about global warming, smoking hazards, or the importance of using seat belts while traveling. By using this marketing device, promoting a product does not feed on or demerit a community. This way, a business does not shamelessly promote a product but contributes information that can benefit a community and the well being of its members.

Thank you for this useful information. One is never sure of what is the correct way to promote things on social sites as there is always the chance of getting banned.
