Link exchanges are are not worth your time to pursue because the search engines have eliminated the value of those links for quite some time now.

The best long term strategy is to create content that people actually find useful and let other related websites know that it exists. And if it’s good content they will most likely link to it.

Another good way is to contact niche related blogs and offer to write an interesting blog post for them as long as you can include a link back to your site.

These are the long-term natural ways to build up your websites authority. And once that authority has been built, that’s when you can start to include more the less valuable types of links that you can build many of.

The quality/quantity debate goes on and on. Personally, I do both. Quality to increase authority and trust, then quantity to capture the long tail traffic. And definitely proactively index all your backlinks using an indexing service. It’s been working for me.
