Below are my top 8 free online marketing methods:

1. Article Marketing – An article can be anywhere from 250 to 750 words long, or longer if you choose. Posting articles on article directories (such as ezinearticles.com) can help you get more traffic to your website through the link in your article resource box. Each article will also help in ranking the specific web page it links to higher in search engines for specific keyword phrases. This will inevitably bring more targeted traffic to your web page.

If writing is difficult for you, simply write shorter articles focused on just one or two points relating to the web page you want to promote. Write a bunch of 250 word articles and then post them on article directories that accept shorter articles (the top article directory, ezinearticles.com, accepts 250 word articles).

2. Do-It-Yourself Search Engine Optimization – You can find a substantial amount of information relating to simple SEO techniques free of charge by doing some basic research via Google. Study the techniques and build each of your web pages around solid SEO principles. This will attract some traffic to your site naturally – without you having to do any active publicity work.

This will prove to be very effective if you target long-tail keyword phrases. Long-tail keywords are longer keyword phrases that are very specific. They attract a smaller amount of visitors but are highly targeted and are much less competitive than more common keywords. If you create a series of ten web pages around ten long-tail phrases, and each page attracts just fifty visitors per month, you’ll gain 500 highly targeted visitors in total. The more pages you build, the more your traffic will continue to grow without you having to do any further work.

3. Blogging – Blogging is a free or very cheap way to do Internet marketing promotion. Some Internet marketers use only blogging and focus on building an online presence through the power of their blog posts. So, if you have a lively writing style and a lot to say for yourself, start blogging! Whether you use Blogger, WordPress, TypePad or some other blogging platform, blogs tend to get great results on the search engines. A blog post around a long-tail keyword can appear on the first page of Google for that search term within hours of being published.

4. Blog Commenting – This Internet marketing promotion method needs to be done with care. Find popular blogs that are related to your niche and post responses to the blog posts. When posting a comment, you’re usually allowed to include a website URL which will hyperlink your name when your comment appears on the blog. Always post constructive comments in response to the topic of the blog. High quality comments will be appreciated and will get people curious to find out more about you. They will then click on the link and arrive on your website. Also, the backlinks created will help your site in the search engines.

5. Forum Posting – Sign up to several forums that deal with your market niche. Set up a signature file with a link back to your website and contribute to the debates on the forums. Each time you post a comment your signature file will send a backlink to your site. Your comments will come to be accepted as an asset to the forum and will show that you are an expert in your field. When this happens, people will start clicking on your signature file links.

6. Post Videos On Video Sharing Sites – If your computer has a web cam, then it won’t cost you anything to make “talking head” style videos and post them on YouTube.com. If you don’t have a web cam, you can buy a very affordable one at most retail outlets. Whenever you upload a video, you can also post a blurb with a link back to your website.

7. Link Exchanging – This is a bit dated now, but it still offers a free method of getting your website “linked in” to the Internet. You can either seek out sites you’d like to exchange links with and contact the site owner, or join a free link exchange service and do it that way.

8. Traffic Exchange Surfing – If you have time to spare, you can always get free traffic by surfing traffic exchanges. However, be sure to post only simple squeeze page style pages on the exchanges because people usually click away from web pages very quickly on traffic exchanges. Create a simple page with a bold headline, a free offer and sign up form, and include a photo of yourself and your name to help build up your online profile.

There are plenty of ways to market your website and get free traffic. Nobody with an Internet connection can claim to be too poor to build and do Internet marketing promotion for an online business when all the methods I mentioned are free.

The process I’m going to be talking about is known as article marketing. The concept of article marketing is to write short articles that are related to your business niche that will be of interest to potential customers. Once you’re finished writing an article you can publish it on your own website or blog. You can also publish it on literally hundreds of article directory sites.

It usually doesn’t cost you anything for publishing writing on an article directory. All that is required is to create a free author account with the directory site. When publishing on an article directory, you’ll be able to add what’s called a “resource box” at the end of the article. The most important thing to know about the resource box is that you can include a URL link/s that links back to one of your web pages. This link is how you’ll get traffic to your website.

The more articles that you publish to directories, the more links you’ll have pointing to your website and the more quality leads those articles will generate for you. Also, there are thousands of website owners that search article directories for content that they can republish on their own websites. In this sense, your article, complete with your resource box and links, could be republished on hundreds of other websites, multiplying the number of links back to your web pages.

In essence, this will increase the amount of traffic you’ll see arriving at your website as people read your article and click through to your web page. Another benefit from this link generation is that your website will become more prominent on Google and other search engines for keywords and keyword phrases relating to your business niche.

Again, you can easily get quality leads for your website free of charge. Comparing article marketing to Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing, article marketing takes longer, but it works continuously over time and on a low budget, or a zero cost budget. PPC, however, will start delivering leads almost immediately, but you’ll be paying for every single one. A lot of inexperienced Internet marketers have had their wallets burned using PPC.

Those are the basics of article marketing, and if publishing writing is all you do to promote your website, you’ll see an improvement in your traffic.

However, as you can imagine, there is more to it than the basics I outlined in this article. But, this will give you a good start and something to think about as you grow your Internet business.

2. Sell newsletter space for banner and classified ads. Banner ads will work with HTML formatted newsletters but not with plain text format. Classified ads will work in any newsletter format.

3. Set-up a section dedicated to book reviews and review books relevant to your business niche. Add affiliate links to the Amazon bookstore where your readers can find the books you’re reviewing. This won’t make you a lot of money, but it will contribute to your bottom line and provide interesting content for your readers.

4. Find other good quality newsletters in a similar niche to your own which has a good-sized list of subscribers and set up an article exchange. Send out one of his or her articles to your list and have him or her send out one of your articles to his or her list. This is a good way to leverage the value of your opt in email list without compromising the privacy of your readers.

5. If you have some old stock that you want to get rid of, offer it to your list first at fire sale prices.

6. If you sell a range of products, figure out a way to bundle them into packages and offer them at a discount to your list.

7. Offer a basic product which includes silver and gold upgrades. For example if you sell an information product, you can also offer an audio and video/DVD as silver and gold upgrade options.

8. Send your subscribers email alerts when there are new product releases, and offer special price reductions before releasing the new products to the general market. This makes your subscribers feel special and gives them an incentive to remain on your opt in email list and to continue reading your newsletter.

9. Set up special “thank you” pages for your newsletter customers so that when they buy a product from you, they’ll be presented with an extra special discount offer on the backend.

10. Create an exclusive members’ site for your newsletter subscribers for a way to gather together all your offers and make them available in a single place.

There are many ways that you can monetize your opt in email list, so it’s worth making an effort to grow your list and build a solid relationship with your subscribers.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is, building and maintaining a list of subscribers interested in receiving email from you can make a big difference. When writing your headlines, though, be sure that the content of your newsletter relates to the headline, otherwise your subscribers will feel cheated or disappointed and will either unsubscribe from your list or simply stop opening your emails.

Another key to building a list of subscribers who actually read your email messages is to avoid the temptation to over-sell your business. If every single one of your emails does nothing more than try to persuade your subscribers to buy your products or join your business opportunity, you’ll probably be disappointed with the results. Instead of trying to sell to your list of subscribers, try to build a relationship with them. To do that it’s important that you think about what your subscribers actually want from you. Most likely what they want is useful information about the market niche that your business is serving. They also want to be entertained. Then you’ll be able to introduce them to your products and services later.

How late is “later”?

It could be a brief sentence and a link at the end of your email, or you could add a little business promotion and web link in the PS section of your email. Or, you could choose to avoid any direct promotion at all in the first few messages that you send out.

Really, it’s a matter of finding the formula that works best for you and your subscribers. But, the point is to show them that you’re an expert in your field whose judgment can be trusted, and to entertain them in the process. Warm and informative newsletters are vital to winning over your subscribers, and winning over your subscribers is of course important to your ultimate objective which is building sales for your business.

An opt in email list gives you the luxury of being able to build a warm and trusting business relationship with a potentially unlimited number of people for no more than the cost of a professional autoresponder service and the time it takes you to research and write your newsletter messages. So, don’t neglect to build your list, and don’t sabotage your efforts by trying to sell to your list before you have warmed up your readership and won them over. Win them over, and you’ll have turned strangers into customers for life.
