Getting
a name domain and setting up a website
are the first steps that you need to take if you want to get your
business up
and running on the internet. However, it is not good to rush into
things before
doing some name domain research to find a name that is available and is
relevant to your business.
If
you
have an off-line business that is well
established, then you will probably want to try to get a domain name
that is
the same as your off-line business name. Just be aware that it is
possible that
somebody else in the world already has that name domain; although, you
may be
able to get the same domain name but in a different form.
For
instance, say you have a business called
Smith Brackets, and the domain name you want is smithbrackets.com. But,
it is
already taken. You may be able to get the domain smith-brackets.com,
using a
hyphen between the two words. Maybe another combination might work if
you can’t
get the domain you want. You can also try to get .net and .biz domains.
Another
option is to use keywords in the domain name, like metalbrackets.com,
metal-brackets.com, or smithmetalbrackets.com.
If
you
are starting a new enterprise on the
Internet, you will have several more options available to you before
you choose
a name for your business. This is where keyword research will come into
play.
It makes sense to choose a name for your business which accurately
explains
what it is and using keywords that people might type into search
engines when
they are searching for the kind of products or services that you offer.
You can
get a lot of good ideas by doing some research using the Google Adwords
keyword
tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.
Once
you
have some ideas for domain names, check
whether they are still available. You will be able to do this on the
website of
your chosen web hosting service as part of the setup process when you
purchase
a web hosting package. If your preferred domain name is available, then
you can
simply go ahead and purchase it, either via your intended web hosting
company
or through a separate domain hosting service, whichever you prefer.
If
the
name domain you want has already been
taken, you might still be able to purchase it from the current owner.
Before
you do anything else, look up the domain name on the Internet to see if
it is
up for sale via a domain broker or domain auction site. If you arrive
at a
fully functioning website, it might still be worth contacting the
website owner
to see if he or she would be interested in selling the name domain to
you. To
find out who owns the domain name, go to whois.com and enter the domain
name.
This
brings up the good question of why someone
would want to buy a domain name that is currently being used by someone
rather
than just starting a new domain name and paying much less.
There
are several very good reasons to buy a
domain name, beyond securing the exact, keyword enriched phrase that
you want.
First, the previous owner probably did a lot to market, advertise and
bring
traffic to the site.
Second,
any search engine optimization work that
was done on the site by the previous owner will continue to benefit the
website. So, to buy an existing and working name domain and point it to
your
new site, you will be getting targeted traffic straight from day one.
This can
save a lot of time and effort on your own part.
I wish you the
best
of success,
