There seems to be an overabundant amount of tips to make working from home on the internet easier or more successful. The problem with this is that some tips can end up being counter-productive and make working from home no different than working in a cubicle.

1. Wake up and Start Working as if you were Actually at a 9-5 Job:

Why would you do this? If you work from home on the internet so you can set your own hours, then why would you want to get up early every day? Some people aren’t morning types, in fact, a lot of people work better during the day or into the evening. If you’re more energetic later in the day, then don’t get the guilts for getting up late and working into the night. for example. If you work better at midnight or 1am (more people than you think), feel free to sleep all day and work all night.

The internet never sleeps, so you can choose the schedule with which you want to work. So long as you actually follow this schedule, it will be right for you. I know of a couple of freelance writers who perform all of their work in the evening. This happens to be their body’s natural cycle and they just follow it.

2. Dress For Your Home Office in the Same Way that you Would for a 9-5 Job

Why would you want to? I understand the concept of getting you into “working mode,” but why would you bother to get dressed up for no reason. If you are able to work effectively at home in your underwear or pajamas, then there is nothing wrong with this. If you need to shower or go for a walk, or even have a nap at mid-day to regain some energy, then by all means do so. Do whatever will make you work efficiently.

3. Build a Proper Workplace to Work at Home on the Internet

Why bother? This may benefit some people, but not everyone. This is a common tip that should not be accepted as truth.

I read a story one time about a successful Internet marketer who started out with several roommates who all happened to work as freelance writers using their laptops. They all circled lounge chairs around the TV and had their computers sitting on their laps. Just about every day, they took turns playing each other on various computer based video games. These groups were, in fact, very productive. They took video game breaks to relieve the routine of writing. They essentially worked from the same seats and consistently and easily put in 10 hours per day. Because they slotted their work times into sections of their daily routine, it felt a lot less like work to them. 5 years down the line when they were living with girlfriends or wives, they attempted to build a proper work place but they found that it just wasn’t as productive for them.

Do what works for you, and ignore the work from home on the internet tips that will only make your day unproductive.
